About Our Council

More than seventy years of Catholic brotherhood and service on Vancouver Island.

Who we are

The world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization

The Knights of Columbus provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people — with 1.8 million members worldwide.

Mid-Island Council #3842 draws most of its members from St. Peter's Parish, and St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic parish here in Nanaimo. Over many decades we have provided funds and volunteer labour for countless projects in both parish and community.

Our History

Half a century of service — and counting

16 May 1954 – today · "The District Dynasty"

Our Council was first established as a sub-Council of Port Alberni, Council #3435 in 1952. On May 16, 1954 we received our own charter and became a council in our own right under the name of Mid-Island Council #3842. It is so named because in its early days it served the entire mid-Vancouver Island region, stretching from Mill Bay/Shawnigan Lake to Qualicum Beach — the first council of the Order in this vast region.

Our Council was started with a most unique inaugural class of 100 candidates. The initiation required two Exemplifications to confer all the degrees, both organized by Alberni Valley Council #3435 on Nov. 17, 1952. The Initiation banquet drew 340 guests! Our Council became only the 16th council in all of British Columbia and was long affectionately referred to as the "District Dynasty".

Under the leadership of Bros. Mladin Zorkin and Neal Beauchesne, new councils were established over the years at Ladysmith, Duncan and Courtenay. Ascension Council was later formed in Parksville, Trinity Council here in Nanaimo in 1988, and the Ladysmith council was re-activated in 2002.

Each of the local councils makes a tremendous contribution to the Church and society through volunteer service. We are building a better world one council at a time, one act of charity at a time. — The Supreme Knight, Knights of Columbus

Patron

Blessed Michael J. McGivney

Father McGivney is a unique model for today's Catholic because of his attention to the social ills and injustices of his day and his collaboration with the laity. He was zealous for the life of union with God through prayer and the sacraments, and would have been right at home in today's world — an eager apostle for the Gospel of life.

The Order established the Father Michael J. McGivney Guild to promote his cause for canonization. Membership is open to anyone who wishes to share in this mission; there is no charge to enroll.
